De naam wijst alleszins op een Frankische oorsprong.

De Sint-Michielskerk is waarschijnlijk ontstaan in de 10de eeuw als villakerk van de heren van Hekelgem. De stoere Romaanse toren werd eeuwenlang “het belfort” genoemd.
