Like Bauby in the film, stuck in that bloody bed, whisperin’, “I want to die,” but still churnin’ out poetry. Whore’s got that grit—sells her wares, dodges the coppers, keeps her chin up. Makes me happy, that does—tough as old boots, she is! Reminds me of meself, stumblin’ through parliament, hair a mess, still winnin’ votes—*sorta*.

This book tries to reconcile those two competing discourses. On one hand, the prostitute is a victim: denied sexual agency she is also denied a voice, a place.

Oh, and don't even get me started on the neighborhoods. West-University-Place is a patchwork of character. At the east end, you got the artsy-pop district – graffiti crunching underfoot, bohemian vibes, and, like, totally unpredictable art pop-ups. While the west part is more polished, with manicured gardens and elegant facades. I used to roll by Grady Lane (yeah, that's right, Grady!) on my scooter, feeling like I was in a montage from Fish Tank – "Why are you so excited?" sometimes echoes my mind when passing by.
